A bathroom is the smallest room we work in and the least forgiving. Everything happens in a few square feet, and the parts that decide whether it lasts twenty years — the waterproofing, the slope, the ventilation — are all invisible once the tile goes on.
What goes on behind the tile
Most bathroom failures we get called to look at are not tile problems. They are water problems: a pan liner that was never properly turned up at the curb, a niche cut into an unprotected wall, a fan vented into the attic instead of through the roof, or grout treated as if it were waterproof.
We build showers with a continuous waterproofing membrane, a correctly sloped pre-slope and pan, blocking behind every grab bar and bench, and a fan sized to the room and ducted to the outside. It costs a little more in materials and adds a day or two. It is the difference between a bathroom that ages well and one that gets torn out again in eight years.
Layout changes and accessibility
Removing a builder-grade garden tub to gain a proper walk-in shower is the single most common change we make to Loudoun County primary baths. It usually means relocating the drain, reframing a knee wall and reworking the vanity run — all straightforward, all worth planning before demolition.
We also build for the long term where clients ask for it: curbless entries, blocking for future grab bars, comfort-height fixtures, wider door openings and lighting that works for someone who no longer sees as well in low light.

How long is a bathroom out of service?
A hall bath is typically two to three weeks; a primary suite with a tiled walk-in shower and separate tub runs three to five. Tile and waterproofing both need cure time that cannot be rushed without shortening the life of the finished room.
Can you convert a garden tub into a walk-in shower?
Yes — it is one of the most common requests we get in Ashburn and Brambleton. We reframe the alcove, move the drain, waterproof the new pan and rebuild the surround. Depending on the layout you often gain usable floor space as well.
Can you add a bathroom to a finished or unfinished basement?
Usually yes. The deciding factor is drainage: if the builder left a rough-in stub you are in good shape, and if not we look at breaking the slab or using a sewage ejector pit. We will tell you which applies after we see it.
