A fireplace is the thing everyone in the room looks at, which is why the stone coursing, the mantel proportions and the hearth height all have to be right. It is also a fire appliance, so the clearances behind the finish are not negotiable.
New fireplaces and refacing existing ones
Refacing a builder-grade fireplace — pulling the tile and oak surround, framing a full-height chase and cladding it in stacked ledge stone with a reclaimed timber mantel — is one of the highest-impact single changes you can make to a family room. It usually takes a week or two.
A new fireplace is a bigger job: framing the chase, setting the firebox, running gas and electrical, building the flue and terminating it correctly. Either way the clearances the manufacturer specifies to combustible framing and mantels govern the design, and mantel depth and height above the opening are limits rather than preferences.
Stone veneer, chimneys and mantels
Stone veneer fails when water gets behind it and has nowhere to go. We build with the drainage plane, weather-resistant barrier, lath and scratch coat detailed properly, weep screed at the base and flashing at every transition — then set the stone with attention to coursing, joint width and how corners return.
Outdoor chimneys need footings below frost depth, a correctly sized flue, a cap and a crown detailed to shed water. Mantels we build from reclaimed timber, dimensional lumber or cast stone, hung on concealed steel or carved corbels and scaled to the wall rather than the catalog.

Can you reface my existing fireplace in stone?
Almost always. We frame out a chase over the existing surround, then clad it in stone veneer. The one constraint is the clearance the firebox requires to combustible material, which sets how deep the mantel can be and how high it sits.
Can a television go above a fireplace?
Yes, with the recess and the heat path planned. We frame a recess with a mantel or shelf that deflects heat, run power and low-voltage into the cavity, and keep the mounting height sensible for the seating rather than as high as the stone will allow.
Is stone veneer or full stone better?
For nearly every residential application, adhered veneer over a properly detailed drainage plane. It is lighter, does not need its own footing and — installed correctly — looks the same. Full-depth stone makes sense mainly for freestanding structures.
