The outdoor spaces that actually get used are the ones with a roof, a heat source and somewhere to cook. Built as one project rather than three, they turn a back lawn into the part of the house everybody ends up in.
Pavilions and covered patios
A freestanding pavilion or an attached covered patio is a real structure: footings below frost depth, columns sized for the span, a framed and shingled roof, and a finished ceiling. We build them with stone-wrapped column bases, stained ceilings, soffit downlighting and fans, and we run the electrical and any gas line during framing rather than chasing it afterwards.
Around a pool, the details shift — bonding requirements for anything metallic, GFCI protection, drainage away from the deck, and paving chosen for wet bare feet. We plan for those from the start.
Outdoor kitchens and fireplaces
An outdoor kitchen is a masonry or framed structure faced in stone with a weather-rated counter, built-in grill, undercounter refrigeration, and sometimes a sink and side burner. What makes one last through Virginia freeze-thaw cycles is the substrate behind the veneer, drainage inside the cabinet boxes and the right sealant at every stone joint.
Outdoor fireplaces are the anchor. We build them with proper footings, correctly sized flues and raised hearths, wrap in bench seating and log storage, and detail the chimney so it reads as part of the house rather than an add-on.

Can an outdoor kitchen or fireplace be used year round?
Under a roof, with a fireplace or overhead heaters, yes — the pavilions we build get used through the winter. Fully exposed installations are realistically three-season here, and we will point out the difference before you spend the money.
Do patios and pavilions need permits?
A ground-level patio often does not. Anything with a roof, a structural footing, gas or electrical does, and pool-area work brings its own requirements. We handle the permitting either way.
Can you build a pavilion next to an existing pool?
Yes, and it is a large share of what we do. The extra considerations are equipotential bonding, GFCI protection, keeping footings clear of pool structure and plumbing, and drainage that moves water away from the pool deck.
What keeps stonework from cracking over the winter?
A properly compacted base, drainage that gets water out from behind and under the stone, footings below frost depth for anything structural, and the correct mortar and sealant. Freeze-thaw damage is nearly always a base or drainage problem rather than a stone problem.
