A wine cellar is a small insulated box that has to hold a steady temperature and humidity against the rest of your basement. Get the envelope right and a modest cooling unit runs quietly for years. Get it wrong and no amount of equipment saves it.
The envelope comes first
A wine room needs a continuous vapour barrier on the warm side, insulation in every wall and the ceiling, a sealed and insulated door with a proper sweep, and no unsealed penetrations. Most cellars that cannot hold temperature are not underpowered — they are leaking, and the cooling unit runs constantly trying to condition the whole basement.
We build the box before we build the pretty part: framing, insulation, vapour control, then a wall assembly detailed for high humidity so moisture never sits against drywall or untreated framing.
Racking, glass and lighting
From there it is the visible half — glass walls and doors that make the collection part of the room, custom racking sized to your bottles rather than a catalog default, display rows, case storage below, and a tasting counter if the space allows.
Lighting is LED, kept out of the cooled airstream and dimmable, because incandescent fixtures both fade labels and fight the cooling unit. We plan the cooling equipment location, condensate route and service access at the same time, so nobody has to dismantle racking to change a filter later.

Wine Cellars — common questions
How much space does a wine cellar need?
Less than most people expect. A well-detailed closet-sized room holds several hundred bottles. What matters more than floor area is that the space can be fully insulated and sealed on all six sides.
Does a wine room need its own cooling system?
For long-term storage, yes — a dedicated wine cooling unit holds both temperature and humidity, which ordinary HVAC does not. For a display wine wall in a conditioned basement, a self-contained cabinet is sometimes enough. We size it to how you actually plan to use it.
Can a wine cellar go in during a basement finish?
That is the ideal time. The insulation, vapour barrier, dedicated circuit and cooling penetration are all far cheaper while the walls are open, and the room can be laid out around the bar instead of squeezed in later.
