Custom Carpentry, Beams, Built-Ins & Trim

Coffered ceilings, exposed beams, arches, columns, built-ins, handrails and the trim details that make a room look built rather than assembled.

Carpentry is what people notice without being able to say why. A coffered ceiling, an arched opening, a beamed great room or a wall of built-ins changes how a room reads far more than paint color ever will.

Ceilings, beams and openings

Coffered and tray ceilings, box beams and exposed reclaimed timber all do the same job: they give a flat ceiling depth and scale. Getting them right is a layout problem — coffers set out from the room center rather than a corner, beam spacing that relates to the window and door openings, and a grid that stays square in a room that is not.

Arches, cased openings, columns and half-walls define space without closing it off. Where a column is carrying load we size and detail it as structure and then wrap it; where it is decorative we say so.

Built-ins, stairs and finish trim

Built-in shelving, window seats, mudroom benches, bar backs and media walls are the carpentry clients get the most daily use out of. We build them scribed to the walls and floors so there is no gap line, with adjustable shelving where it makes sense and integrated lighting where it earns its keep.

Handrails, newel posts, balusters and stair skirts are code-governed as well as visual — graspable profiles, baluster spacing and guard height are all specified. Beyond that it is crown, base, casing, wainscot, paneled walls, coffered soffits and interior doors, with profiles chosen to match what the house already has.

Custom Carpentry & Trim — common questions

Can you match trim in an older house?

Yes. Where a profile is still made we source it; where it is not, we have it milled from a sample so the new work reads as original. Mismatched casing is one of the fastest ways to make a renovation look like a renovation.

Are exposed beams real or decorative?

We build both. Reclaimed timber beams are usually genuine timber applied to the ceiling; box beams are built hollow, which lets us hide wiring or a duct run inside them. Structural beams are sized by load and then wrapped to match.

Do you do carpentry as a standalone project?

Yes. Plenty of our carpentry work is its own project — a coffered ceiling, a wall of built-ins, a stair rail replacement — rather than part of a larger renovation.
